Skincare's New Addition

Recently I posted a blog about listening to you skin and using products that are right for you rather than feeding into what everyone else is using. Well, there is a dermatology company in development that will be looking deeper into issues like acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and other skincare problems.

I got the opportunity to chat with the Robert Bitterman, the CEO of this new company called Cutanea Life about what the company plans to do in the area of dermatology and some skincare tips.

Hi, how are you today?

I'm fine. How are you, Brynn?

Well, I am doing wonderful. Thank you so much for joining me today. So first talk to us a little bit about your company CLS and what it is doing in the dermatology world.

Well, at this stage we are a development company and that means that we are working on new molecules to bring them through the FDA pathways and eventually through to commercialization. We have about 33 people on board today, and each of them have different technical and scientific backgrounds to touch everything from acne to rosacea to psoriasis and also other types of HPV virus (all which affect the skin).

So this is really bringing up a variety of skincare issues. Not just the breakout we hear about everyday. Now in this area, what have you noticed to be the most prevalent issue that a lot of people across the country are dealing with?

I think the skin issues that affect people while predominantly are not life-threatening, they do affect one's appearance which is an important factor in one's self-esteem. Each of these different conditions where you have different types of lesions such as acne with pimples on the face or different types of redness. All of these are very relevant and predominant among people of many ages and locations. Many of these people are looking for effective treatments for which not all treatments work that well.

So as CLS is still in development, how does this company compare with some of the other skincare brands out there?

In terms of looking at novel drugs, the number of companies actually specializing in dermatology across the number of different therapeutic areas is limited. So we are somewhat uniquely positioned. In the dermatology space, it is a little bit smaller with size and scope than other medical areas. The attractiveness to very large Pharma companies is non-significant because the size of the market is smaller. This plays very much to a company our size. With these different types of conditions, we see there are really only a handful of other companies doing the same thing.

So a lot of what you are working on will open people's eyes to how we shoujld appropriately treat these issues. What are some of your biggest tips to treating some of the more common skin issues?

My suggestion to the patients is (now our products will be under physician prescription) to not be afraid to contact your doctor and have them look further into the skin issue. It could be something very benign or something very serious like skin cancer which is obviously life-threatening.

Oh wow! That's a great point. We should really be paying attention to what our skin is responding to and not take it too lightly at the risk of something serious being the cause. Now where can people go for more information about skincare and your company as it is developing?

We have a new website coming together and that is www.cutanealife.com. That will be the best source for the type of work that we are doing.
