Get Healthy This New Year

1/22/14

Losing weight and staying fit are always two of the top New Year's Resolutions each year.  According to a new nutrition survey from Prevention magazine, nearly half of all Americans are concerned they may not be getting enough of one or more key nutrients from their current diet.

Brynn McKenry spoke with board-certified General Internist and former CBS Chief Medical Correspondent, Holly Phillips, and the President of Zied Health Communications, Elisa Zied.

Avoid Gaining Weight This Holiday Season

12/16/14

The holidays are supposed to be a happy time of the year filled with family, friends, seasonal treats, and anything else that says holiday spirit.

But for many people the holiday cheers goes away when they step foot on that scale.  That number on the scale is also the reason for so many New Year's resolution choices.  I have a question for you.  What if you created small goals for yourself throughout the holiday season that helps you avoid that typical holiday weight gain?

Some ideas that can help:

  • Avoid that yo-yo dieting and maintain a healthy weight.  Rather than a 100% no to indulgences, allow it in moderation.

  • Choose seasonal foods that taste great while keeping you feeling full and festive.

  • Keep yourself active by getting to the gym and avoid eating too much.  This will also help you manage that holiday stress.  Also make sure you're making plenty of time for both exercise and sleep during the busiest time of the year.

  • When you are craving something sweet, try reaching for a low or no-calorie beverage to help balance out some of the other calories you're consuming.

Don't let the holiday season derail you from being healthy.  Don't be afraid to indulge in SOME of your favorite holiday treats, but remember to keep it a lifestyle and you won't be shocked when you go to step on that scale come resolution time.
